[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks): Ayat 102

১০২. অতঃপর সে যখন পিতার সাথে চলাফেরা করার বয়সে উপনীত হল, তখন ইব্রাহীম তাকে বললঃ বৎস! আমি স্বপ্নে দেখিযে, তোমাকে যবেহ করছি; এখন তোমার অভিমত কি দেখ। সে বললঃ পিতাঃ! আপনাকে যা আদেশ করা হয়েছে, তাই করুন। আল্লাহ চাহে তো আপনি আমাকে সবরকারী পাবেন।

Ayat 102. And, when he (his son Ismael PBUH) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allah), so look what you think!" Ismael PBUH said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Insha' Allah (if Allah will), you shall find me ofAs-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.)."

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 102. Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in Vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what thy view is!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practicing Patience and Constancy!" Where did this vision occur? The Muslim view is that it was in or near Makkah. Some would identify it with the valley of Mina, six miles north of Makkah, where a commemoration sacrifice is annually celebrated as a rite of the Hajj on the tenth of Dhu alHijjah, the 'Id of Sacrifice, in memory of this Sacrifice of Abraham PBUH and Ishmael PBUH (see n. 217 to 2:197). Others say that the original place of sacrifice was near the hill of Marwah (the companion hill to Safa, 2:158), which is associated with the infancy of Ismail. At what stage in Abraham's history did this occur? See n. 21:69. It was obviously after his arrival in the land of Cannan and after Ishmael PBUH had grown up to years of discretion. Was it before or after the building of the Kab'ah (2:127)? There are no data on which this question can be answered. But we may suppose it was before that event, and that event may itself have been commemorative.

Hazrat Abu Saeed & Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Never a believer is stricken with a discomfort, an illness, an anxiety, a grief or mental worry or even the pricking of a thorn but Allah will expiate his sins on account of his patience".

[Al-Bukhari Book 07, Chapter 70, Hadith # 545]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 102. Ismael PBUH said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Insha' Allah (if Allah will), you shall find me of As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.)” This Hadith mentions the special Grace and Mercy of Allah for the Muslims. It relates how Allah turns the hardships and troubles suffered by a Muslim into a means of expiation for his sins. But this is only possible if the believer exercises patience. However, if he starts wailing instead of showing patience then besides suffering hardships, he would be deprived of the reward which lies in bearing them patiently. Thus, he shall have to take the burden of additional sins also. 

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks): Ayat 97-101

৯৭. তারা বললঃ এর জন্যে একটি ভিত নির্মাণ কর এবং অতঃপর তাকে আগুনের স্তুপে নিক্ষেপ কর।

৯৮. তারপর তারা তার বিরুদ্ধে মহা ষড়যন্ত্র আঁটতে চাইল, কিন্তু আমি তাদেরকেই পরাভূত করে দিলাম।

৯৯. সে বললঃ আমি আমার পালনকর্তার দিকে চললাম, তিনি আমাকে পথপ্রদর্শন করবেন।

১০০. হে আমার পরওয়ারদেগার! আমাকে এক সৎপুত্র দান কর।

১০১. সুতরাং আমি তাকে এক সহনশীল পুত্রের সুসংবাদ দান করলাম।

Ayat 97. They said: "Build for Ibrahim PBUH a building (it is said that the building was like a furnace) and throw him into the blazing fire!"

Ayat 98. So they plotted a plot against Ibrahim PBUH, but Allah made them the lowest.

Ayat 99. And Ibrahim PBUH said (after his rescue from the fire): "Verily, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me!"

Ayat 100. "My Lord! Grant me (offspring) from the righteous."

Ayat 101. So Allah gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing child.

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 97. They said, "Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!" The argument of Abraham PBUH was so sound that it could not be met by argument. In such cases Evil resorts to violence, or secret plotting. Here there was both violence and secret plotting. The violence consisted in throwing him into a blazing Furnace. But by the mercy of Allah the fire did not harm him (21:69), and so they resorted to plotting. But the plotting, as the next verse (37:98) shows, was a boomerang that recoiled on their own heads. Ayat 98. (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but Allah made them the ones most humiliated! Cf. 21:71. Their plot against the righteous Abraham PBUH failed. He PBUH migrated from the country (Chaldea, Babylon, and Assyria) and prospered in Syria and Palestine. It was his persecutors that suffered humiliation. Ayat 99. He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me! This was the Hijrah of Abraham. He left his people and his land, because the Truth was dearer to him than the ancestral falsehoods of his people. He trusted himself to Allah, and under Allah's guidance he laid the foundations of great peoples. See n. 2725 to 21:69. Ayat100. "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!" Ayat 101. So Allah gave him the good news of a child ready to suffer and forbear. This was in the fertile land of Syria and Palestine. The boy thus born was, according to Muslim tradition, the first-born son of Abraham, viz., Ishmael. The name itself is from the root Sami’s, to hear, because Allah had heard Abraham's PBUH prayer (verse 100). Abraham's PBUH age when Ishmael PBUH was born was 86 years. The boy's character was to be Halim, which I have translated "ready to suffer and forbear". This title is also applied to Abraham PBUH (in 9:114 and 11:75). It refers to the patient way in which both father and son cheerfully offered to suffer any self-sacrifice in order to obey the Command of Allah.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said "When (Prophet) Ibrahim PBUH (Abraham) was thrown into the fire, he said: "Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and, He is the Best Disposer of affairs.'' So did Messenger of Allah Muhammad  [SAWW](PBUH) when he was told: "A great army of the pagans had gathered against him, so fear them". But this (warning) only increased him and the Muslims in Faith and they said: "Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)".

[Al-Bukhari Book 06, Chapter 60, Hadith # 086] 

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 98. So they plotted a plot against Ibrahim PBUH, but Allah made them the lowest” Even in the worst circumstances one should always have faith and trust in Allah.

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks): Ayat 91-96

৯১. অতঃপর সে তাদের দেবালয়ে, গিয়ে ঢুকল এবং বললঃ তোমরা খাচ্ছ না কেন?

৯২. তোমাদের কি হল যে, কথা বলছ না?

৯৩. অতঃপর সে প্রবল আঘাতে তাদের উপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ল।

৯৪. তখন লোকজন তার দিকে ছুটে এলো ভীত-সন্ত্রস্ত পদে।

৯৫. সে বললঃ তোমরা স্বহস্ত নির্মিত পাথরের পূজা কর কেন?

৯৬. অথচ আল্লাহ তোমাদেরকে এবং তোমরা যা নির্মাণ করছ সবাইকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন।

Ayat 91. Then Ibrahim PBUH turned to their aliha (gods) and said: "Will you not eat (of the offering before you)?

Ayat 92. "What is the matter with you that you speak not?"

Ayat 93. Then he turned upon them, striking (them) with (his) right hand.

Ayat 94. Then they (the worshippers of idols) came, towards him, hastening.

Ayat 95. Ibrahim PBUH said: "Worship you that which you (yourselves) carve?

Ayat 96. "While Allah has created you and what you make!"

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 91. Then did Ibrahim PBUH turn to their gods and said, "will ye not eat (of the offerings before you)? Ayat 92. "What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?" Ayat 93. Then did Ibrahim PBUH turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand. With the right hand: as the right hand is the hand of power, the phrase means that he struck them with might and main and broke them (Cf. 37:28). Ayat 94. Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him). Ayat 95. He said: "Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved? His action was a challenge, and Ibrahim PBUH drives home the challenge now with argument. 'Do you worship your own handiwork? Surely worship is due to Him Who made you and made possible your handiwork!' Ayat 96. "But Allah has created you and your handwork!"

Hazrat Mauwiyah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "When Allah wishes good for someone, He bestows upon him the understanding of Deen.'' [Al-Bukhari Book 01, Chapter 03, Hadith # 071].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 95. Ibrahim PBUH said: "Worship you that which you (yourselves) carve?” Knowledge and understanding of Deen (religion) here stands for the understanding of the Qur'an and Hadith, religious injunctions, and knowledge of the lawful and the unlawful. This Hadith highlights the excellence of knowledge and the fact that it is a sign of Allah's Help to the person who possesses it and acts upon it.

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks): Ayat 83-90

৮৩. আর নূহ পন্থীদেরই একজন ছিল ইব্রাহীম।

৮৪. যখন সে তার পালনকর্তার নিকট সুষ্ঠু চিত্তে উপস্থিত হয়েছিল,

৮৫. যখন সে তার পিতা ও সম্প্রদায়কে বলেছিলঃ তোমরা কিসের উপাসনা করছ?

৮৬. তোমরা কি আল্লাহ ব্যতীত মিথ্যা উপাস্য কামনা করছ?

৮৭. বিশ্বজগতের পালনকর্তা সম্পর্কে তোমাদের ধারণা কি?

৮৮. অতঃপর সে একবার তারকাদের প্রতি লক্ষ্য করল।

৮৯. এবং বললঃ আমি পীড়িত।

৯০. অতঃপর তারা তার প্রতি পিঠ ফিরিয়ে চলে গেল।

Ayat 83. And, verily, among those who followed his [Nuh's PBUH (Noah)] way (Islamic Monotheism) was Ibrahim PBUH (Abraham).

Ayat 84. When he came to his Lord with a pure heart [attached to Allah Alone and none else, worshipping none but Allah Alone true Islamic Monotheism, pure from the filth of polytheism].

Ayat 85. When Ibrahim PBUH said to his father and to his people: "What is it that which you worship?

Ayat 86. "Is it a falsehood aliha (gods) other than Allah that you seek?

Ayat 87. "Then what do you think about the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn’s, and all that exists)?"

Ayat 88. Then he cast a glance at the stars (to deceive them),

Ayat 89. And he said: "Verily, I am sick (with plague. He did this trick to remain in their temple of idols to destroy them and not to accompany them to the pagan's feast)."

Ayat 90. So they turned away from him, and departed (for fear of the disease).

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 83. Verily among those who followed his Way was Abraham PBUH. The main story will be found in 21:51-73; but the episode about his readiness and that of his son to submit to the most extreme form of self-sacrifice under trial (in verses 102-107 below) is told here for the first time, as this Surah deals with the theme, "Not my will, but Thine be done!" In "followed his way", the pronoun "his" refers to Noah PBUH. Ayat 84. Behold! Ibrahim PBUH approached his Lord with a sound heart. "A sound heart"; qalb Salem: a heart that is pure, and unaffected by the diseases that afflict others, as the heart in Arabic is taken to be not only the seat of feelings and affections, but also of intelligence and resulting action, it implies the whole character. Cf. Abraham's title of Hanif (the True); 2:135 and n. 134. Cf. also 26:89: "only he will prosper who brings to Allah a sound heart." Ayat 85. Behold! He PBUH said to his father and to his people, "What is that which ye worship? Ayat 86. "Is it a falsehood- gods other than Allah. That ye desire? False worship—worship of idols or stars or symbols, or Mammon or Self-is due either to false and degrading conceptions of Allah, or to a sort of make believe, where practice is inconsistent with knowledge or ignores the inner promptings of Conscience. Abraham's challenge to his people is: 'Are you fools or hypocrites?' Ayat 87. "Then what is your idea about the Lord of the Worlds?" 'Do you not realize that the real Creator is One-above all the forms and superstitions that you associate with Him?' Ayat 88.Then did he cast a glance at the Stars. Ayat 89. And he said, "I am indeed sick (at heart)!" The grief was really preying on his mind and soul, that he should be associated with such falsehoods. His father himself was among the chief supporters of such falsehoods, and his people were given up wholly to them. He could not possibly share in their mummeries, and they left him in disgust. Then he made his practical protest in the manner narrated in 21:56 -64. Ayat 90. So they turned away from him, and departed.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said,  "Verily, Allah likes three things for you and disapproves three things for you. He likes that you should worship Him Alone, not to associate anything with Him (in worship) and to hold fast to the Rope of Allah and not to be divided among yourselves; and He disapproves for you irrelevant talk, persistent questioning and the squandering of the wealth.'' [Muslim Book 018, Chapter 03, Hadith # 4255]."

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 85. When Ibrahim PBUH said to his father and to his people: "What is it that which you worship?." Besides stressing Tauhid, holding fast to the Rope of Allah and unity (which are greatly liked by Allah), this Hadith forbids unnecessary debate, hair-splitting and extravagance as all the three are disliked by Allah. Wealth has a great importance in man's life since it is the very source of sustenance and basis of his livelihood, its wastage is akin to cutting the branch of the tree on which one is sitting.

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks): Ayat 79-82

৭৯. বিশ্ববাসীর মধ্যে নূহের প্রতি শান্তি বর্ষিত হোক।

৮০. আমি এভাবেই সৎকর্ম পরায়নদেরকে পুরস্কৃত করে থাকি।

৮১. সে ছিল আমার ঈমানদার বান্দাদের অন্যতম।

৮২. অতঃপর আমি অপরাপর সবাইকে নিমজ্জত করেছিলাম।

Ayat 79. Salamun (peace) be upon Nuh (Noah) (from Allah) among the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn’s and all that exists)!"

Ayat 80. Verily, thus Allah reward the Muhsinun (good-doers).

Ayat 81. Verily, he [Nuh PBUH (Noah)] was one of Allah’s believing servants.

Ayat 82. Then Allah drowned the other (disbelievers and polytheists, etc.).

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 79. "Peace and salutation to Noah among the nations!" The story of the Flood is found in some form or other among all nations, and not only among those who follow the Mosaic tradition. In Greek tradition the hero of the flood is Deucalion, with his wife Pyrrhus; in Hindu tradition (Shatapatha Brahmana and Mahabharata) it is the sage Manuand the Fish. The Chinese tradition of a great Flood is recorded in Shu-King. Among American Indians the tradition was common to many tribes. Ayat 80. Thus indeed do we reward those who do right? Ayat81. For he was one of our believing Servants. 82. Then the rest we overwhelmed in the Flood.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said,  "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, the world will not come to an end until a man passes by a grave and will lie over it saying, `Would that I were in this grave (i.e., dead)!' Not he will say so because of religious reasons but because of widespread mischief and severe trials of this world.''  [Al-Bukhari Book 09, Chapter 88, Hadith # 231] 

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 80. Verily, thus Allah reward the Muhsinun(good-doers)” There would be such disasters and agony in the world that people will prefer death to life under such conditions. This situation will arise before the Day of Resurrection, and the Day of Judgment will dawn on such wicked people.

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks): Ayat 75-78

৭৫. আর নূহ আমাকে ডেকেছিল। আর কি চমৎকারভাবে আমি তার ডাকে সাড়া দিয়েছিলাম।

৭৬. আমি তাকে ও তার পরিবারবর্গকে এক মহাসংকট থেকে রক্ষা করেছিলাম।

৭৭. এবং তার বংশধরদেরকেই আমি অবশিষ্ট রেখেছিলাম।

৭৮. আমি তার জন্যে পরবর্তীদের মধ্যে এ বিষয় রেখে দিয়েছি যে,

Ayat 75. And indeed Nuh (Noah) invoked Allah, and Allah is the Best of those who answer (the request).

Ayat 76. And Allah rescued him and his family from the great distress (i.e. drowning),

Ayat 77. And, his progeny, them Allah made the survivors (i.e. Shem, Ham and Japheth).

Ayat 78. And left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations to come in later times:

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 75. (In the days of old), Noah PBUH cried to Allah, and Allah is the best to hear prayer. Cf. 21:76-77. The story of Noah PBUH occurs in many places; here the point is that when men gird themselves against evil, Allah protects them, and Evil cannot triumph against Allah's Plan. Ayat 76. And Allah delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity, The Deluge, and the Flood of Noah PBUH. The main story will be found in 11:25 -48. Ayat77. And made his progeny to endure (on this earth); Noah's PBUH posterity survived the Rood in the Ark, while the rest perished. Ayat 78. And Allah left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times: His name is remembered forever, commencing a new era in religious history.

Hazrat Sahl bin Saad As-Saaidi (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, guide me to such an action which, if I do Allah will love me and the people will also love me.'' the Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Have no desire for this world, Allah will love you; and have no desire for what people possess, and the people will love you.'' [Ibn Majah, Hadith # 4102]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 78. And left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations to come in later times" "Zuhd'' (ascetism) does not mean renunciation of the world and obligations of life. What it really means is that one should be contented with what he possess and rid himself of greed. Islam neither permits renunciation of the world nor does it condemn genuine struggle to acquire wealth and riches. Therefore, involvement in worldly affairs and struggle for lawful means of livelihood are not against Zuhd. A person who is contented with the lawful means of income is a distinguished person as all his activities are exalted to the level of worship. Similarly, unconcern with the wealth and riches of others and ignoring them is a part of Zuhd and contentment. One additional advantage of it is that such a person wins the love and respect of the people because he who begs people, rather than Allah, has to suffer disgrace and is disliked by the people. The case of begging from Allah is just the opposite. The more a person begs Him, the more pleased He will be with him. In fact, He is displeased if someone does not beg Him. This has been exquisitely stated in an Arabic verse, the meaning of which is: "Do not stretch your hands before anyone for your needs, but beg from Him (Allah) whose door is always open". "If a person does not beg Him (Allah), He is displeased, while if one begs someone He becomes furious"

[37].Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks): Ayat 69-74

৬৯. তারা তাদের পূর্বপুরুষদেরকে পেয়েছিল বিপথগামী।

৭০. অতঃপর তারা তদের পদাংক অনুসরণে তৎপর ছিল।

৭১. তাদের পূর্বেও অগ্রবর্তীদের অধিকাংশ বিপথগামী হয়েছিল।

৭২. আমি তাদের মধ্যে ভীতি প্রদর্শনকারী প্রেরণ করেছিলাম।

৭৩. অতএব লক্ষ্য করুন, যাদেরকে ভীতিপ্রদর্শণ করা হয়েছিল, তাদের পরিণতি কি হয়েছে।

৭৪. তবে আল্লাহর বাছাই করা বান্দাদের কথা ভিন্ন।

Ayat 69. Verily, they found their fathers on the wrong path;

Ayat 70. So they (too) made haste to follow in their footsteps!

Ayat 71. And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them;

Ayat 72. And indeed Allah sent among them warner’s (Messengers);

Ayat 73. Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not).

Ayat 74. Except the chosen servants of Allah (faithful, obedient, and true believers of Islamic Monotheism).

Tafseer of Surah As-Saffat (Those Ranged in Ranks) Ayat 69 to 74. Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path; Ayat 70. So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps! A grim reproach. You found your fathers doing wrong; and you must rush headlong in their footsteps to perdition!' Ayat 71. And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray; - Ayat 72. But Allah sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them; - It is human to err. The error is forgiven if there is repentance and amendment. The point is that Allah in His mercy at all times in history sent messengers and teachers to give His Message, and men deliberately rejected that Message. Ayat 73. Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not), It is on the reception or rejection of Allah's teachings and guidance that judgment will come. In this world itself, see what the teaching of history is. Unrighteousness and wrongdoing never prosper in the long run. 74. Except the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah. But there is always a band of sincere and devoted men who serve Allah, and the highest spiritual life is open to them (Cf. 37:160). this verse occurs at 37:40 above, where the argument of the difference between the fates of the righteous and the unrighteous was begun. Here it is rounded off with the same phrase, and now we proceed to take illustrations from the early Prophets.

Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "There will emerge from the East some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not exceed their throats and who will go out of (renounce) the religion (Islam) as an arrow passes through the game, and they will never come back to it unless the arrow, comes back to the middle of the bow (by itself) (i.e., impossible). The people asked, "What will their signs be?" He  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Their sign will be the habit of shaving (of their beards). [Al-Bukhari Chapter 093, Hadith # 651]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah As-Saffat Ayat 69. Verily, they found their fathers on the wrong path; and Ayat 70. So they (too) made haste to follow in their footsteps! Only such people will be elevated who act upon the teachings of the Qur'an and abstain from what is forbidden by Allah. The Muslims of the early centuries of Islam were blessed with great honor by Allah because they loved and applied the Qur'an. Because of this meaningful attachment with the Qur'an, they made great achievements in religious and worldly spheres. Those who neglected the teachings of Islam will be disgraced and humiliated. May Allah guide and enable us to re-establish our contact with the Qur'an so that we can regain our past glory. Exaltation and humiliation mentioned in the Hadith is bound to happen in both this life and the Hereafter.
