[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 025

Ayat 25. Verily, those who have turned back (have apostated) as disbelievers after the guidance has been manifested to them, Shaitan (Satan) has beautified for them (their false hopes), and (Allah) prolonged their term (age).

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 25. Those who turn back as apostates after Guidance was clearly shown to them, the Evil One has instigated them and busied them up with false hopes. Such men are entirely in the hands of Evil. They follow its suggestions, and their hopes are built on its deceptions.

Hazrat Wabisah bin Mabad (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I went to Messenger of Allah image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) and he asked me, "Have you come to inquire about piety?'' I replied in the affirmative. Then he said, "Ask your heart regarding it. Piety is that which contents the soul and comforts the heart, and sin is that which causes doubts and perturbs the heart, even if people pronounce it lawful and give you verdicts on such matters again and again.'' [Masnad Ahmad, Imam Ahmad Hadith # 228/4].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 25. “those who have turned back (have apostated) as disbelievers after the guidance” There are two points about this Hadith. First, it is one of the miracles of Messenger of Allah image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) who discovered the nature of the question before it was put to him. Second, man's heart is the biggest guide to him and he, therefore, should keep his heart illuminated with the light of Faith so as to continue receiving guidance from it.

[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 022-024

Ayat 22. Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship?
Ayat 23. Such are they whom Allah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight.
Ayat 24. Do they not then think deeply in the Qur’an, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 22 to 24. Then, is it to be expected of you, if ye were put in authority, that ye will do mischief in the land, and break your ties of kith and kin? It is no use to say, as the Quraysh said, that it is not seemly to fight against kith and kin. From one point of view the stand against sin brings "not peace, but a sword". It is a case of either subduing evil or being subdued by evil. If evil gets the upper hand, it is not likely to respect ties of kith and kin. It did not in the case of the Prophet and his adherents, and had to be suppressed, to bring about the conditions necessary for peace. Ayat 23. Such are the men whom Allah has cursed for He has made them deaf and blinded their sight. Cursed: i.e., deprived of His Grace: left them straying, because they deliberately rejected His guidance. The result is that what they hear is as if they had not heard, and what they see is as if they had not seen. They have no desire to understand Allah's Will or Allah's Revelation—or is it that they have themselves locked and bolted their hearts and minds, so that nothing can penetrate them? Ayat 24. Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur´an, or are their hearts locked up by them?

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allahimage001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) said,  "Do not ask me unnecessarily about the details of the things which I do not mention to you. Verily, the people before you were doomed because they were used to putting many questions to their Prophets and had differences about their Prophets. Refrain from what I forbid you and do what I command you to the best of your ability and capacity". [Al-Bukhari Chapter # 92 Hadith # 391].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 24. Do they not then think deeply in the Qur’an, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)? And Surah Saba Ayat 38. “Those who strive against Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)” To be unnecessarily inquisitive and create differences and confusion in the Injunctions of Allah and His Prophet image001.jpg[SAWW](PBUH) leads to destruction. The safest course lies only in following the Orders of Allah and His Prophet image001.jpg[SAWW](PBUH) without `ifs' and `buts.' Hairsplitting in religious issues falls in this category. It opens the door for chaos and conflict and paves the way for disunity and separation. May Allah give sense to the Muslim Ummah to abandon this road and take the Right Path which ensures peace and security. Let it be absolutely clear that the Right Path is one and one alone. There cannot be multiple right paths, it is one and singular. Once a community leaves the Straight Path, it is sure to go astray.

[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 020-021

Ayat 20. Those (Hypocrites) who believe say: "Why is not a Surah (chapter of the Qur’an) sent down (for us)? But when a decisive Surah (explaining and ordering things) is sent down, and fighting (Jihad holy fighting in Allah’s Cause) is mentioned (i.e. ordained) therein, you will see those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) looking at you with a look of one fainting to death. But it was better for them (hypocrites, to listen to Allah and to obey Him).
Ayat 21. Obedience (to Allah) and good words (were better for them). And when the matter (preparation for Jihad) is resolved on, then if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them.

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 20 and 21. Those who believe ay, "Why is not a Surah sent down (for us)?" But when a Surah of basic or categorical meaning is revealed, and fighting is mentioned therein, thou wilt see those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee with a look of one in swoon at the approach of death. But more fitting for them- The men of faith and loyalty are eager and anxious to get a command to serve the Cause even if it be at the sacrifice of their lives. Not so the Hypocrites, "those in whose hearts is a disease". They are mortally afraid as mentioned below. Cf. 3:7. The defense of truth and righteousness at all sacrifice, when a definite and categorical command issues from Amir al Mu'minin is a fundamental condition of enlistment in the cause of Allah. It is true that Punishment and Judgment belong to Allah alone; but our mettle and fidelity have to be tested, (see verse 4 above), and Allah uses human agency in human affairs. Cf. 2:10. The disease is hypocrisy, disloyalty to the Cause, want of courage and of the spirit of self-sacrifice, want of true understanding. Ayat 21. Were it to obey and say what is just, and when a matter is resolved on, it were best for them if they were true to Allah. The resolution is not taken except under guidance from Allah. Those, therefore, who fail to implement it by their own effort and sacrifice, are not true to Allah. And such disloyalty or cowardice is not even good for them from a worldly point of view. With what face can they meet their friends after their disgraceful conduct?

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allahimage001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) said,  "He who dies without having fought in the Cause of Allah or without having thought of doing so, will die with one characteristic of hypocrisy in him.'' [Muslim Hadith # 1910].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 20. Those (Hypocrites) who believe say: "Why is not a Surah (chapter of the Qur’an) sent down (for us)?” We learn from this Hadith that it is a different matter that one may not get a chance to take part in Jihad, but it would be a hypocritical attitude if one does not ever think that if an opportunity ever comes in his way, he will certainly go for Jihad in the way of Allah against the infidels. The reason to that is that, to stay back at home at the time of Jihad was a habit of the hypocrites. In the light of this, Imam Al-Qurtubi has stated the principle that if one is not capable of doing some virtuous deeds, he should then make a resolve that whenever he will be capable of it, he will do that deed, so that his intention takes the place of his act. He who neither performs a good deed nor aspires for it, has a hypocritical disposition. This is especially true of a Muslim who does not even aspire to take part in Jihad. Such a Muslim develops a resemblance with hypocrites.

[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 019

Ayat 19. So know (O Muhammad image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) that La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. And Allah knows well your moving about, and your place of rest (in your homes).

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 19. Know, therefore, that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for thy fault, and for the men and women who believe: for Allah knows how ye move about and how ye dwell in your homes. Cf. 40:55. The time and manner of our conducting ourselves at home and when we move about on our business are all material to the judgment of our conduct, and for every nuance in our moral and spiritual progress, we must seek Allah's help and guidance.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allahimage001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) reported I heard : The Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) saying: "By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.'' [Al-Bukhari Book 08, Chapter 75, Hadith # 319]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 19. “Ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women”. 1. It is an inducement for seeking pardon and forgiveness. The Prophet  [SAWW](PBUH), whose past and future sins were forgiven, asked Allah's forgiveness - then how about us, who commit sins on regular basis, not to seek pardon and forgiveness from Allah?

[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 018

Ayat 18. Do they (the disbelievers) then await (anything) other than the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly? But some of its portents (indications and signs) have already come, and when it (actually) is on them, how can they benefit then by their reminder?

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 18. Do they then only wait for the Hour,- that it should come on them of a sudden? But already have come some tokens thereof, and when it (actually) is on them, how can they benefit then by their admonition? Cf. 43:66. The sands of time are always running, and when a wrong is done, the time for its punishment is approaching every moment. No one should therefore wait. The time for repentance is Now at any given time. When the punishment comes, it is too late for repentance, and all admonition would be useless. Looking to the particular time when this Surah was revealed, viz., about a year after the Hijrah, already there were Signs that the plans of the Pagans to crush Islam were crumbling to pieces. The Hijrah showed how much good will there was in Madinah for the Prophet of Allah, and how many people from Makkah adhered to him. The battle of Badar showed that they could hold their own against odds of three to one.

Hazrat Zainab (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) came to visit me one day frightened and he  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "La ilaha illallah (There is no true God but Allah). Woe to the Arabs because of an evil which has drawn near! Today an opening of this size has been made in the barrier restraining Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog people).'' And he  [SAWW](PBUH) made a circle with his thumb and index finger. I said, ``O Messenger of Allah! Shall we perish while still there will be righteous people among us?'' He  [SAWW](PBUH) replied, "Yes, when wickedness prevails".  [Al-Bukhari Book 04, Chapter 55, Hadith # 565].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 18. Do they (the disbelievers) then await (anything) other than the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly?" This Hadith also tells us about the ominous of sin. It says that when vice becomes common, then in spite of the presence of some virtuous persons, that community will be destroyed. But on the Day of Resurrection, those noble persons who had done their duty of preaching virtue and checking vice will stand apart from the sinners. Thus this Hadith induces one to keep away from sins.

[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 017

Ayat 17. While as for those who accept guidance, He increases their guidance, and bestows on them their piety.

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 17. But to those who receive Guidance, He increases the (light of) Guidance, and bestows on them their Piety and Restraint (from evil). Spiritual advancement is progressive: each step makes the next ones easier and more complete.

Hazrat Mauwiyah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah image001.jpg[SAWW](PBUH) said, "When Allah wishes good for someone, He bestows upon him the understanding of Deen.'' [Al-Bukhari Book 01, Chapter 03, Hadith # 071].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 17. While as for those who accept guidance, He increases their guidanceKnowledge and understanding of Deen (religion) here stands for the understanding of the Qur'an and Hadith, religious injunctions, and knowledge of the lawful and the unlawful. This Hadith highlights the excellence of knowledge and the fact that it is a sign of Allah's Help to the person who possesses it and acts upon it.

[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 016

Ayat 16. And among them (Hypocrites) are some who listen to you (O Muhammad image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) till, when they go out from you, they say to those who have received knowledge: "What has he said just now? Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and they follow their lusts (evil desires).

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 16. And among them are men who listen to thee, but in the end, when they go out from thee, they say to those who have received Knowledge, "What is it he said just then?" Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and who follow their own lusts. Cf. 10:42, and 6:25, 36. The case here referred to is that of the Hypocrites who came to the assemblies of Islam in Madinah and pretended to listen to the Prophet's teaching and preaching. But their heart and mind were not in learning righteousness, but in carping at things they saw and heard. When they got out, they knew nothing of the teaching, but on the contrary asked foolish and ignorant questions, such as might raise doubts.

Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) said, "I do not think that so-and-so understands anything of our Faith.'' [Al-Bukhari Book 08, Chapter 73, Hadith # 93]
Al-Bukhari said: Hazrat Al-Laith bin Saad (May Allah be pleased with him), who is one of the narrators of this Hadith, said: The two men mentioned by the Prophet image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) in this Hadith were hypocrites (i.e., they revealed Faith and concealed disbelief).

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 16. “they say to those who have received knowledge: "What has he said just now? Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and they follow their lusts (evil desires). Hypocrites are also people of mischievous and doubtful conduct. It is, therefore, not only permissible but necessary to make people aware of their real position so that people become cautious about them and their religious and worldly life may remain safe from their machinations.
