[47] Surah Muhammad: Ayat 018

Ayat 18. Do they (the disbelievers) then await (anything) other than the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly? But some of its portents (indications and signs) have already come, and when it (actually) is on them, how can they benefit then by their reminder?

Tafseer of Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 18. Do they then only wait for the Hour,- that it should come on them of a sudden? But already have come some tokens thereof, and when it (actually) is on them, how can they benefit then by their admonition? Cf. 43:66. The sands of time are always running, and when a wrong is done, the time for its punishment is approaching every moment. No one should therefore wait. The time for repentance is Now at any given time. When the punishment comes, it is too late for repentance, and all admonition would be useless. Looking to the particular time when this Surah was revealed, viz., about a year after the Hijrah, already there were Signs that the plans of the Pagans to crush Islam were crumbling to pieces. The Hijrah showed how much good will there was in Madinah for the Prophet of Allah, and how many people from Makkah adhered to him. The battle of Badar showed that they could hold their own against odds of three to one.

Hazrat Zainab (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) came to visit me one day frightened and he  [SAWW](PBUH) said, "La ilaha illallah (There is no true God but Allah). Woe to the Arabs because of an evil which has drawn near! Today an opening of this size has been made in the barrier restraining Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog people).'' And he  [SAWW](PBUH) made a circle with his thumb and index finger. I said, ``O Messenger of Allah! Shall we perish while still there will be righteous people among us?'' He  [SAWW](PBUH) replied, "Yes, when wickedness prevails".  [Al-Bukhari Book 04, Chapter 55, Hadith # 565].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Muhammad image001.jpg Peace be upon him] Ayat 18. Do they (the disbelievers) then await (anything) other than the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly?" This Hadith also tells us about the ominous of sin. It says that when vice becomes common, then in spite of the presence of some virtuous persons, that community will be destroyed. But on the Day of Resurrection, those noble persons who had done their duty of preaching virtue and checking vice will stand apart from the sinners. Thus this Hadith induces one to keep away from sins.
