[54] Surah Al-Qamar [The Moon]: Ayat 018-022

Ayat 18. 'Ad (people) belied (their Prophet, Hud PBUH), then how (terrible) was My Torment and My Warnings?
Ayat 19. Verily, We sent against them a furious wind of harsh voice on a day of evil omen and continuous calamity.
Ayat 20. Plucking out men as if they were uprooted stems of date-palms.
Ayat 21. Then, how (terrible) was My Torment and My Warnings?
Ayat 22. And We have indeed made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember, then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?

Tafseer of Surah Al-Qamar (The Moon) Ayat 18. The ´Ad (people) (too) rejected (Truth): then how terrible was My Penalty and My Warning? 19. For We sent against them a furious wind, on a Day of violent Disaster, Cf. 41:16. How graphic is the description of the tornado that uprooted them! It must indeed be a dreadful tornado that plucks up the palm trees by their taproots. The "Day" is an indefinite period of time. The wind that destroyed the 'Ad people lasted seven nights and eight days: 69:7. 20. Plucking out men as if they were roots of palm-trees torn up (from the ground). 21. Yea, how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning! Repeated from verse 18 to heighten the description of the sin, the penalty, and the criminal negligence of the sinners in refusing the warnings on account of their self-complacent confidence in their own strength and stability! It is repeated again as a secondary refrain in 54:30 and (with slight modification) in 54:37 and 39. 22. But We have indeed made the Qur´an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allahimage001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Verily, Allah gives respite to the oppressor. But when He seizes him, He does not let him escape.'' Then he (PBUH)) recited, "Such is the Seizure of your Rubb when He seizes the (population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful (and) severe". (11:102).  [Al-Bukhari Book 06, Chapter 60, Hadith # 208]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Qamar Ayat 21. Then, how (terrible) was My Torment and My Warnings?" One should not take the respite for exemption because no one knows when respite granted by Him will come to an end and punishment will follow. .

[54] Surah Al-Qamar [The Moon]: Ayat 016-017

Ayat 16. Then how (terrible) was My Torment and My Warnings?
Ayat 17. And We have indeed made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember, then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?

Tafseer of Surah Al-Qamar (The Moon) Ayat 16. But how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning? While the Mercy of Allah is always prominently mentioned, we must not forget or minimize the existence of Evil, and the terrible Penalty it incurs if the Grace of Allah and His Warning are deliberately rejected. 17. And We have indeed made the Qur´an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition? While the Qur'an sums up the highest philosophy of the inner life, its simple directions for conduct are plain and easy to understand and act upon. Is this not in itself a part of the Grace of Allah? And what excuse is there for anyone to fail in receiving admonition?

Hazrat Usman bin Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah cid:image004.gif@01D1F687.EA3B55B0[SAWW](PBUH) said, "The best amongst you is the one who learn the Qur'an and teach it.''  [Al-Bukhari Book 06, Chapter 61, Hadith # 545].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Qamar Ayat 17. And We have indeed made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember" This Hadith tells us excellence of people who learn Quran and then spend their time teaching to others. Only such people will be elevated who act upon the teachings of the Qur'an and abstain from what is forbidden by Allah. The Muslims of the early centuries of Islam were blessed with great honour by Allah because they loved and applied the Qur'an. Because of their meaningful attachment with the Qur'an, they made great achievements in religious and worldly spheres. Those who neglected the teachings of Quran & Islam will be disgraced and humiliated. May Allah guide and enable us to re-establish our contact with the Qur'an so that we can regain our past glory.

[54] Surah Al-Qamar [The Moon]: Ayat 009-015

Ayat 9. The people of Nuh (Noah) denied (their Messenger) before them, they rejected Our slave, and said: "A madman!" and he was insolently rebuked and threatened.
Ayat 10. Then he invoked his Lord (saying): "I have been overcome, so help (me)!"
Ayat 11. So We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring forth.
Ayat 12. And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs. So the waters (of the heaven and the earth) met for a matter predestined.
Ayat 13. And We carried him on a (ship) made of planks and nails,
Ayat 14. Floating under Our Eyes, a reward for him who had been rejected!
Ayat 15. And indeed, We have left this as a sign, then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?

Tafseer of Surah Al-Qamar (The Moon) Ayat 9. Before them the People of Noah rejected (their messenger): they rejected Our servant, and said, "Here is one possessed!", and he was driven out. The story of Noah and the Flood is frequently referred to in the Qur'an. The passage which best illustrates this passage will be found in 11:25-48. Note in that passage how they first insult and abuse him arrogantly; how he humbly argues with them; how they laugh him to scorn, as much as to say that he was a madman possessed of some evil spirit; and how the Flood comes and he is saved in the Ark, and the wicked are doomed to destruction. 10. Then he called on his Lord: "I am one overcome: do Thou then help (me)!" He did not call down punishment. He merely asked for help in his mission, as he felt himself overpowered by brute force and cast out, which prevented the fulfilment of his mission. But the wicked generation were past all repentance, and they were wiped out. 11. So We opened the gates of heaven, with water pouring forth. 12. And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs, so the waters met (and rose) to the extent decreed. The torrents of rain from above combined with the gush of waters from underground springs, and caused a huge Flood which inundated the country (Cf.11:40 and 23:27). 13. But We bore him on an (Ark) made of broad planks and caulked with palm- fiber: Dusur, plural of disar, which means the palm fiber with which boats are caulked: from dasara, to ram in, to spear. A derived meaning is "nails", (which are driven into planks): this latter meaning also applies, and is preferred by translators not familiar with the construction of simple boats. 14. She floats under our eyes (and care): a recompense to one who had been rejected (with scorn)! As usual, Allah's Mercy in saving His faithful servants takes precedence of His Wrath and Penalty. And He helps and rewards those whom the world rejects and despises! 15. And We have left this as a Sign (for all time): then is there any that will receive admonition? Cf. 29:15, where the Ark (with the salvation it brought to the righteous) is mentioned as a Sign for all Peoples. So also in 25:37 and 26:121, it is a Sign for men. Similarly the saving of Lot, with the destruction of the wicked Cities of the Plain, is mentioned as a Sign left for those who would understand: 29:35 and 51:37. A refrain that occurs six times in this Surah: see Introduction.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) said, He who has done a wrong affecting his brother's honor or anything else, let him ask his forgiveness today before the time (i.e., the Day of Resurrection) when he will have neither a dinar nor a dirham. If he has done some good deeds, a portion equal to his wrong doings will be subtracted from them; but if he has no good deeds, he will be burdened with the evil deeds of the one he had wronged in the same proportion".
[Bukhari Book 08, Chapter 76, Hadith # 541].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Qamar Ayat 9. The people of Nuh (Noah) denied (their Messenger) before them, they rejected Our slave, and said: "A madman!" and he was insolently rebuked and threatened” This Hadith tells us that if one does not compensate a person who has been harmed by one and has not been pardoned for it, then it would have a serious consequence in the Hereafter. Its detail is mentioned in this Hadith. Thus, negligence in the case of public rights, which we take very lightly, is in fact ruinous.

[54] Surah Al-Qamar [The Moon]: Ayat 004-008

Ayat 4. And indeed there has come to them news (in this Qur’an) wherein there is (enough warning) to check (them from evil),
Ayat 5. Perfect wisdom (this Qur’an), but (the preaching of) warners benefit them not,
Ayat 6. So (O Muhammad image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) withdraw from them. The Day that the caller will call (them) to a terrible thing.
Ayat 7. They will come forth, with humbled eyes from (their) graves as if they were locusts spread abroad,
Ayat 8. Hastening towards the caller, the disbelievers will say: "This is a hard Day."

Tafseer of Surah Al-Qamar (The Moon) Ayat 4. There have already come to them Recitals wherein there is (enough) to check (them), The stories of the sins of past generations having been visited with exemplary punishments were already in their possession, and should, if they had been wise, have opened their eyes and checked them in their mad career of sin. Five of these stories are again referred to later in this Surah by way of illustration. 5. Mature wisdom;- but (the preaching of) Warners profits them not. 6. Therefore, (O Prophet image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) turn away from them. The Day that the Caller will call (them) to a terrible affair, for a time godlessness seems to triumph, but the triumph is short-lived. And in any case there is the great Reckoning of the Day of Judgment. The angel whose voice will call at the Resurrection and direct all souls. Cf. 20:108-111. 7. They will come forth, their eyes humbled – from (their) graves, (torpid) like locusts scattered abroad, At one stage in the invasion of locust swarms, the locusts are torpid and are scattered abroad all over the ground. I have seen them on railway tracks in ' Iraq, crushed to death in hundreds by passing trains. The simile is apt for the stunned beings who will rise up in swarms from their graves and say, 'Ah! woe unto us! Who had raised us up?" (36:52). 8. Hastening, with eyes transfixed, towards the Caller!- "Hard is this Day!” the Unbelievers will say.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allahimage001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Between the two Blowing of the Trumpet there will be an interval of forty.'' The people said, "O Abu Hurairah! Do you mean forty days?'' He said, "I cannot say anything.'' They said, "Do you mean forty years?'' He said, "I cannot say anything.'' They said, "Do you mean forty months?'' He said, "I cannot say anything. The Prophet image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) added: Everything of the human body will perish except the last coccyx bone (end part of the spinal cord), and from that bone Allah will reconstruct the whole body. Then Allah will send down water from the sky and people will grow like green vegetables'.''  [Al-Bukhari Volume 6, Book 60, Number 457].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Qamar Ayat 7. They will come forth, with humbled eyes from (their) graves as if they were locusts spread abroad. 1. When Israfil blows the Trumpet the first time, by Allah's Leave, all those who are in the heavens and on earth will swoon away, except him whom Allah will. This will be the first Blowing. Then, it will be blown a second time, they will become alive and will emerge from their graves. These Blowing are known as the `Blowing of Fainting and Rising'. As regard the interval between these two Blowing, the narrator of the narration, Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him), could not say anything when he was asked about it; as he himself did not know it. But in other narrations the interval has been mentioned as forty years. 2. The earth eats away the whole body of humans except the bodies of the Prophets. However, only the end part of the spinal cord remains intact. How it remains intact is known to Allah, but from it mankind will be created again. 3. Bodies will rise from the earth as vegetation springs out from the earth after the rainfall.

[54] Surah Al-Qamar [The Moon]: Ayat 001-003

Ayat 1. The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon).
Ayat 2. And if they see a sign, they turn away, and say: "This is continuous magic."
Ayat 3. They belied (the Verses of Allah, this Qur’an), and followed their own lusts. And every matter will be settled [according to the kind of deeds (for the doer of good deeds, his deeds will take him to Paradise, and similarly evil deeds will take their doers to Hell)].

Tafseer of Surah Al-Qamar (The Moon) Ayat 1. The Hour (of Judgment) is nigh, and the moon is cleft asunder. The idea of the judgment being nigh at the beginning of this Surah connects it with the same idea at the end of the last Surah (verse 57), though the actual words used in the two cases are different. Three explanations are given in the Mufradat, and perhaps all three apply here: (1) that the moon once appeared cleft asunder in the valley of Makkah within sight of the Prophet, his Companions, and some Unbelievers; (2) that the prophetic past tense indicates the future, the cleaving asunder of the moon being a Sign of the Judgment approaching; and (3) that the phrase is metaphorical, meaning that the matter has become clear as the moon. That the first was noticed by contemporaries, including Unbelievers, is clear from verse 2. The second is an incident of the disruption of the solar system at the New Creation: Cf. 75:8-9. And the third might well be implied as in eastern allegory, based on the other two. 2. But if they see a Sign, they turn away, and say, "This is (but) transient magic” Mustamirr: transient, or powerful: either meaning will apply. The Unbelievers acknowledge the unusual appearance, but call it magic. They do not therefore profit by the spiritual lesson. 3. They reject (the warning) and follow their (own) lusts but every matter has its appointed time. The prevalence of sin and the persecution of truth may have its day, but it must end at last.

Hazrat Al-Mustaurad bin Shaddad (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "This world (i.e., its pleasures and duration) in comparison with the Hereafter is (similar to the amount of water) one gets when he puts his finger in the sea. Let him then see what it returns with".  [Muslim Book , Chapter , Hadith # 6843]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Qamar Ayat 3. They belied (the Verses of Allah, this Qur’an), and followed their own lusts" This Hadith shows the value of the Hereafter and its blessings compared to the worldly life. The proportion between the two is that the former is like an ocean while the latter is like the proportion of water left on one's finger when dipped in the sea!.

[53] Surah An-Najm [The Star]: Ayat 059-062 [Ayat-e Sejdah]

Ayat 59. Do you then wonder at this recital (the Qur’an)?
Ayat 60. And you laugh at it and weep not,
Ayat 61. Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing, etc.).
Ayat 62. So fall you down in prostration to Allah, and worship Him (Alone).

Tafseer of Surah An-Najm (The Star) Ayat 59 to 62. Do ye then wonder at this recital? Mere wondering will not do, even if it is the wonder of admiration. Each soul must strive and act, and Allah's Mercy will take it under its wings. 60. And will ye laugh and not weep, The higher issues of Life and the Hereafter are serious, and therefore all that we do in this life is serious and important. We must shun inanities and frivolities. It is no laughing time. If we only realized our own shortcomings, we should weep, with our good angels who weep for us. But weeping by itself will not help. We must try and understand Allah and adore Him. Thus shall we be able to understand ourselves and our fellow-men. 61. Wasting your time in vanities? 62. But fall ye down in prostration to Allah, and adore (Him)! And so we are invited to prostrate ourselves and adore Him. For this is the true end of Revelation and the true attitude when we understand the world, Nature, History and the working of Allah's Plan.

Hazrat Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah cid:image003.gif@01D1F257.2D1E44D0 [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Read the Qur'an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.''  [Muslim Book 04, Chapter 133, Hadith # 1757]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah An-Najm Ayat 59. Do you then wonder at this recital (the Qur’an)?" This Hadith tells the excellence of reciting the Qur'an and acting upon its injunctions. Intercession (in this Hadith) means that the Qur'an will be endowed with the power of speech by Allah and it will request Allah to forgive the sins of its reciters who acted upon its teachings. Allah will accept the request of the Qur'an, as signified in other Ahadith.

[53] Surah An-Najm [The Star]: Ayat 055-058

Ayat 55. Then which of the Graces of your Lord (O man!) will you doubt.
Ayat 56. This (Muhammad image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) is a warner (Messenger) of the (series of) warners (Messengers) of old.
Ayat 57. The Day of Resurrection draws near,
Ayat 58. None besides Allah can avert it, (or advance it, or delay it).

Tafseer of Surah An-Najm (The Star) Ayat 55 to 58. Then which of the gifts of thy Lord, (O man,) wilt thou dispute about? With a slight modification this forms the refrain of the next Surah but one, the highly poetical Surah of Al Rahman. In S. 54:15, 17 etc., there is a similar refrain in different words. Every gift and benefit you have is from Allah, and to save you from the just punishment of your sins, Allah at all times sends revelations and Messengers to warn you. Why not accept Allah's Grace instead of disputing about it? 56. This is a Warner, of the (series of) Warners of old! The Prophet before Quraysh (and before us) continues the line of messengers of Allah who have come to teach mankind and lead men into unity and righteousness. Shall we not listen to his voice? Every day that passes, the Judgment approaches nearer and nearer. But Allah alone can say at what precise hour it will come to any of us. It is certain, and yet it is a mystery, which Allah alone can lay bare. 57. The (Judgment) ever approaching draws nigh: 58. No (soul) but Allah can lay it bare.

Hazrat Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were accompanying a funeral procession in Baqi Al-Gharqad (graveyard in Al-Madinah) when the Messenger of Allah cid:image003.gif@01D1F249.00290E00[SAWW](PBUH) proceeded towards us and sat down. We sat around him. He had a small stick in his hand. He was bending down his head and scraping the ground with the stick. He said, "There is none among you but has a place assigned for him either in the Jannah or in the Hell.'' The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, should we not depend upon what has been written for us (and give up doing good deeds)?'' The Messenger of Allah cid:image003.gif@01D1F249.00290E00 [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Carry on doing good deeds. Everyone will find it easy to do such deeds (as will lead him to his destined place) for which he has been created.'' [Al-Bukhari 02, Chapter 23, Hadith # 444].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah An-Najm Ayat 56. This (Muhammad image001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) is a warner (Messenger) of the (series of) warners (Messengers) of old" The subject of this chapter is exactly related to the Hadith accounting for reasons of giving a sermon speech beside the grave. As the dimension of the world's impermanent nature and a heart-moving scene directly confront a man's eyes on this occasion, any moral exhortation is most likely to touch the heart. Secondly, the good or bad deeds of man during his fixed life span in this world prefigure in Allah's Knowledge, and He has ordained the good or bad end of everybody. But this does not mean that man is simply helpless in doing what Allah has predetermined. Indeed, Allah already knows that such and such a person will adopt the righteous conduct and meet a good end; and such and such a person will take to the mischievous way and consequently meet a bad end. Unless man has access to Allah's Knowledge and the Preserved Tablet (which is impossible), he is not supposed to give up the right conduct by banking upon His Knowledge. When he is totally ignorant of the Sacred Writ on his ultimate end, he has no other choice but to continue endeavoring in good pursuits. Allah has given him the freedom of choice and will subject him to accountability on this count alone. Moreover, it is the Divine principle that He helps everybody do only that type of work - facilitating it to him as well - which is germane to his bent of mind. Then, there is no reason that man should lag behind in embarking upon the virtuous path and not try to seek the Grace of Allah.
