Ayat 28. O
you who believe [in Musa (Moses) (i.e. Jews) and 'Iesa (Jesus) (i.e.
Christians)]! Fear Allah, and believe too in His Messenger (Muhammad [SAWW](PBUH),
He will give you a double portion of His Mercy, and He will give you a
light by which you shall walk (straight), and He will forgive you. And
Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Tafseer of Surah Al-Hadid Ayat 28. O ye that believe! Fear Allah, and believe in His Messenger, and He will bestow on you a double portion of His Mercy: He will provide for you a Light by which ye shall walk (straight in your path), and He will forgive you (your past): for Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful. From the context before after (see next note). this is held to refer to the Christians and People of the Book who kept their Faith true and undefiled. The double portion refers to the past and the future. As noted in the last note, this passage is addressed to the Christians and the People of the Book, who, when honestly facing the question of the new Revelation in Islam, find in it the fulfilment of previous revelations, and therefore believe in Allah's Messenger Muhammad, and walk by the new Light. Their previous merits will be duly recognized, and they will be treated on fully equal terms in the new Ummah. This is their double share, not necessarily more in quantity than that of their brethren in Islam who passed through no other gate, but having a twofold aspect. As this refers to the Christians and the People of the Book, the following saying of Christ in his last days may interest them: "Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you. While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. also 57:12. Any wrongs they may have committed through ignorance or misconceptions in their previous religion will be forgiven them, as they have seen the new Light and walk by it.
Hazrat Abu Musa Al-Ashari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH)
said, "Three kinds of people will have a double reward: A man from the
People of the Book who believes in his Prophet and (also) believes in
Muhammad [SAWW](PBUH)
; a slave who discharges properly the duties towards Allah and towards
his master; and a man who possesses a slave-girl and teaches her
manners, educates her well, and frees her and then marries her.'' [Muslim Book 04, Chapter 55, Hadith # 655].
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Hadid Ayat 28. He (Allah) will give you a double portion of His Mercy,
1.
Ahlul-Kitab means the people of the Scriptures that are the Jews and
the Christians. This Hadith has an inducement for them that if they
embrace Islam, they will be entitled to a double reward.
2.
Similarly, a sincere and well-wishing slave will also be entitled to a
double reward because, on the one side, he obeys his master and bears
all the trouble that is involved in his obedience, and on the other
side, he also does justice to the worship of Allah.
3.
Muslims have been enjoined to impart proper education and training to
their slaves, especially their slave-girls. In the latter case, they
have been advised to liberate and marry them with all the essentials of
marriage. That is, they should be given a dower and all other rights to
which wives are entitled. There is a double reward for all these types
of people.
