[42]. Surah Ash-Shura [The Consultation]:Ayat 032-033

৩২. সমুদ্রে ভাসমান পর্বতসম জাহাজসমূহ তাঁর অন্যতম নিদর্শন।

৩৩. তিনি ইচ্ছা করলে বাতাসকে থামিয়ে দেন। তখন জাহাজসমূহ সমুদ্রপৃষ্ঠে নিশ্চল হয়ে পড়ে যেন পাহাড়। নিশ্চয় এতে প্রত্যেক সবরকারী, কৃতজ্ঞের জন্যে নিদর্শনাবলী রয়েছে। 

 

Ayat 32. And among His Signs are the ships, in the sea, like mountains.

Ayat 33. If He wills, He causes the wind to cease, then they would become motionless on the back (of the sea). Verily, in this are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

Tafseer of Surah Al Shura (Consultation) Ayat 32 and 33. And among His Signs are the ships, smooth running through the ocean, (tall) as mountains. The great and stately ships are appealed to again and again as being among the Signs of Allah, from many aspects. The aspect referred to here is how the great sailing ship runs prosperously as long as "the breath of heaven fill the sail", and what a miserable helpless creature she becomes when she once becomes becalmed. Students of English literature will remember the striking picture which Coleridge draws in his "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." The becalmed ship is as it were in the grip of Death because of the crime which the sailor had committed, and his mind feels psychologically the full force of the Sign. By analogy we can apply this to other craft: the steamer is not free from other dangers of the sea, nor aircraft from numerous dangers of the air. Ayat 33. If it be His Will He can still the Wind: then would they become motionless on the back of the (ocean). Verily in this are Signs for everyone who patiently perseveres and is grateful. If we study such Signs in the right spirit, we learn the highest lessons for our spiritual life: on the one hand, patient perseverance with reliance on Allah, and on the other a feeling or attitude of grateful thanks to Allah, that He enables us to achieve so much in spite of our shortcomings, and forgives in us so much that deserves punishment and disaster.

Hazrat Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah  [SAWW](PBUH) used to say at the conclusion of prayer: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku, wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa `ala kulli shai'in Qadir. Allahumma la mani'a lima a'tayta, wa la mu`tiya lima mana'ta, wa la yanfa'u dhal-jaddi, minkal-jaddu (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him, His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent. O Allah! None can deny that which You bestow and none can bestow that which You hold back; and the greatness of the great will be of no avail to them against You).''  [Al-Bukhari Book 09, Chapter 92, Hadith # 395]. 

 

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Ash-Shura Ayat 33. Verily, in this are signs for everyone patient and grateful” Al-Jaddu'' means good luck and richness. That is, good fortune and prosperity will not be of any avail before Allah. What will really benefit a person before Him are Faith and virtuous deeds. The prayer quoted in this Hadith makes a special mention of His Oneness.
