[53] Surah An-Najm [The Star]: Ayat 019-022

Ayat 19. Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs)
Ayat 20. And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third?
Ayat 21. Is it for you the males and for Him the females?
Ayat 22. That indeed is a division most unfair!

Tafseer of Surah An-Najm (The Star) Ayat 19. Have ye seen Lat. and ´Uzza, From the heights of divine Glory, we come back again to this sorry earth, with its base idolatries. We are asked to "look at this picture, and at that!" The three principal idols of Pagan Arab Idolatry were the goddesses Lat, 'Uzza, and Manat, Opinions differ as to their exact forms: one version is that Lat was in human shape, 'Uzza had its origin in a sacred tree, and Manat in a white stone. 20. And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 21. What! For you the male sex, and for Him, the female? To show Allah in human shape, or imagine sons or daughters of Allah, as if Allah were flesh, was in any case a derogation from the supreme glory of Allah, high above all creatures, even if the human shapes were invested with great beauty and majesty as in the Greek Pantheon. But when we consider in what low opinion Pagan Arabia held the female sex, it was particularly degrading to show Allah, or so-called daughters of Allah, in female shapes. Cf. 16:57 -59, and also 52:39. 22. Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair!

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allahimage001.jpg [SAWW](PBUH) said, "He who takes an oath and involuntarily says: `By Al-Lat and Al-`Uzza' should at once affirm: `La ilaha illallah (there is no true god except Allah)', and he who says to his companion: `Come let's gamble' should make expiation by giving something in charity.''
[Al-Bukhari Book 06, Chapter 60, Hadith # 383].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah An-Najm Ayat 19. Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs)" Al-Lat and Al-`Uzza were the idols of the polytheists of Arabia. To take oath or swear by them or by anything else besides Allah is an act of disbelief which takes one out of the fold of religion.
