[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The Criterion]: Ayat 71-72

Ayat 71. And whosoever repents and does righteous good deeds, then verily, he repents towards Allah with true repentance.
Ayat 72. And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity.

[Tafseer of Ayat] 71. And whoever repents and does good has truly turned to Allah with an (acceptable) conversion;- [Tafseer] of Ayat 72. Those who witness no falsehood, and, if they pass by futility, they pass by it with honorable (avoidance); Witness no falsehood has two significations, both implied in this passage: (1) those who give no evidence that is false; and (2) those who do not assist in anything which implies fraud or falsehood. There is not only condemnation of positive falsehood or of being mixed up with things implying falsehood, but futilities-vain random talk, unedifying jokes, useless show, etc.-are all condemned. If a good man finds himself in such an affair, he must withdraw from it in an honorable, dignified way, not in a fussy arrogant way.

Hazrat Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Shall I not inform you of one of the gravest of the cardinal sins?'' We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!'' He (PBUH) said, "To join others as partners with Allah in worship and to be undutiful to one's parents.'' The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sat up from his reclining position (in order to stress the importance of what he was going to say) and added, "I warn you making a false statement and giving a false testimony. I warn you against making a false statement and giving a false testimony.'' The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) kept on repeating this (warning) till we wished he should stop.
[Al-Bukhari Book 08, Chapter 74, Hadith # 290-291].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Furqan Ayat 72."And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk" The contents of this Hadith make the gravity of making a false statement abundantly clear. How unfortunate indeed it is that, like other major sins, the evil of giving false testimony is very common among the present-day Muslims. May Allah prevent us from it.
